Observation details
Rare, largely pelagic shorebird. Likely a storm-tossed bird from Friday's severe weather - but still unexpected at this location. Bird observed feeding in shore break with RBGU and HEGU, frequently flying to avoid crashing waves. Chunky phalarope with thicker, heavier bill than RNPH. Yellow base to bill with uniform gray upperparts. Bird was intent on feeding, allowing fairly close approach. Observed for twenty minutes then observed flying out into LI Sound. Photos attached.
