Observation details
Incredible experience with this very secretive species. We had passed by Alán's spot for these a little bit and got distracted by a big flock coming in to FEPO whistles, and an actual pygmy-owl. Then Alán heard one, so we ran back and played tape, no response. Not sure how Alán got on it, but he turned around and there was a full male nervously sitting on a branch behind us. We enjoyed great views, and after 10-15 seconds or so I went and tried for pics, expecting it to dive for cover any second. Surprisingly it remained in view, but constantly changing positions and looking around nervously. Managed to get some ok videos and pictures. The rose color is just incredible and I can't think of another bird that has that color - a vivid pink-rose on the breast, front of supercilium (fades to pale white-pink behind eye), median coverts, and vent. Otherwise blackish gray with some pale edging to wing feathers. I think thrush-tanager is an ok name, but I think thrush-thrasher would be better that seems to catch the essence of the secretive behavior better. I guess the tanager is for the bright color. We heard a second and I got recordings of them calling back and forth, saw this second fly by and it was a female with orangish color instead of the pink.
