Observation details
At (19.5578617, -98.9753104). First Estado de México record. I heard the classic eastern phoebe- like chip call and told Alán it was a swamp. He said no way it’s gotta be a song because swamp sparrows aren’t here. I argued that it’s def a swamp because I know my melospiza sparrows dangit. We soon found it perched up on some cattails and got pics, video, and recordings. Lifer for Alán!!! Melospiza with mostly unmarked gray breast, maybe some slight flammulation and a hint of a dark breast spot. Pale base to bill, white throat. Dark auricular and crown, but otherwise face a clean gray. Bold rufous in wing coverts, slight brown/buff on flanks. No heavy streaking below like SOSP or light streaking on buff chest like LISP. For recording, only caught one call note at 17-18s.
