Observation details
A lone bird spotted near the East Bumps about 8:02 a.m. (44.178162° N, 67.678068° W). Bold white patches at base of primaries, large, heavy bodied skua with large bill evident even at distance; buff-gold spotting on upperparts and flanks; pale streaks on neck; body coloration rather dark, almost blackish brown but in good light showed more reddish-cinnamon tones. Dark area around eye gave vague eye-patch appearance. Inner primary molt evident by notch at ~p4 (p3 dropped or growing). Photos show prominent white slash on upper left wing where greater primary coverts shed over ~p3; right upper wing shows white "dots" across secondary coverts and two white "dots" over base of primaries (p4-5). Bird flew northeastward strongly and we pursued.
