Observation details
Lifer! Heard their harsh “clapping” call throughout the morning off and on. Closely related to King Rails - this used to be the KIRA of the central volcanic belt marshes until it was split recently. Tried at Lerma back in 2019 without even hearing one so good to get them today. Would often respond to each other, able to count 5 at once this way closer to the big lake. Counted by ones throughout the morning for total of ten. One flushed close by first thing, didn’t get a good look just saw large dark rail with reddish bill. There are VIRA in the marsh as well but they are not very common and we didn’t even hear any today. Later on right where we had the SWSP I saw one run nervously across a patch of mud, saw the large size, barred hind flanks, long orange/ red bill, and orange face for a quick but good look. Looked like a big marsh chicken which it is pretty much except laterally compressed. Got decent recording but way too fast for a picture.
