Observation details
First saw it at a distance perched on a warning sign. General profile and stance of a phoebe, but it was overall sandy-colored underneath. Once I got the binocs on it, I immediately saw it was a Say’s. Head medium dark gray, with a broad black bill slightly hooked at the tip. Back medium gray-brown with darker primaries. Breast sandy colored, and abdomen and flanks were the striking orange-salmon characteristic of Say’s (darker on the under tail coverts). Size similar to an Eastern Phoebe—maybe slightly larger. It actively foraged during the 20 minutes I observed it (1028-1048). The bird also exhibited tail bobbing. Photographed.
