roadrunner bark
Observation details
First bird sat on cliff edge where Pajarito Canyon drops into White Rock Canyon; sunbathed for 40 minutes, making what I've now identified as the "bark" (not the male descending "song," which I've heard in years past). Akkana Peck joined me and twice we observed it make a sharper bark with a rattle that we could see was the beak clacking; the head and tail went on alert as it dashed after something, then returned to the sunbathing perch. Eventually it meandered southward along the cliff edge. We saw second bird on the cliff edge to the south; it sunbathed awhile and then turned north into the juniper scrub. The first bird eventually disappeared into the same scrub, probably 10-15 minutes later.
