Observation details
Rare. Continuing female-type which I saw here yesterday. Better photos today. Under cloudier light it looks a colder grayer tone of dark brown on head, neck, back, folded wings & tail; a bit paler on sides, slightly scaly on breast, considerably paler on belly (but photo may be overly washed out). No head-pumping seen when swimming today. Tended to swim away from docks a bit when any birder moved toward shore at park. Much time with Bufflehead flock diving & preening. Joined Mallards only coincidentally with feeding below docks but was followed away from docks by a male or a pair of Mallards when it surfaced with larger food it couldn’t swallow fast but always kept & ate it. Always dove for food, opening wings slightly & spreading flat tail while lunging forward & down.
