Observation details
Not this exact location. Roosting in a barn with a DNR barn owl nest box. Encountered while performing necessary nest box maintenance (cleaning out and making small repairs when needed). Nest boxes are maintained periodically (about once every 5 years) during the fall/winter season when nests are less likely to be active, in order to reduce disturbance to these state-endangered birds. Nest boxes help barn owls by giving them a safe place to roost and nest. You can help barn owls by donating to the Nongame Wildlife Fund, or by building and installing a nest box in open grassland habitat.
