Observation details
Continuing on the dike. Around 8:30am, we turned around to walk back from the car and noticed it perched on top of one of the brown trash cans, the third one East along the dike. Surprisingly good camouflage with the poop-covered trash can lid. After a couple minutes of observation at close range, it lifted up and headed off to the South, seemingly to land in the large open area that looks like it used to be a lake, although we were never able to find it in that area with scopes. Flew in again about an hour later with a lark flock and landed in roughly the same area, this time on the shore before moving up the large rocks that made up the dam. Very cooperative. Small bird with bright white belly and neck, dark brown and gray back and wings, with stark white panels in the wings. Golden brown face, top of head, and band across breast. Orange bill with black tip. Imagine a toasted marshmallow with wings. Very vocal, doing a sharp, loud, high-pitched “teew” flight call, distinct from larks and longspurs. Every once in a while, while perched, it would make a melodic sort of rattle call. Audio (!) and photos.
