Observation details
This species continues its presence in NM. However, as is usually my experience this time of year, these birds were skulky and called very little. Oddly enough, I encountered several singing on my hike out in the AZ portion of the canyon. A chunky sparrow with cool sooty gray underparts (no markings). Thin black malar and submoustachial stripes. Warm rufousy wings, and rusty colored crown. Pale bill with dusky uppermandible. Line through eye dark in lores and rufous behind the eye.
