Observation details
Whoa!!! Three loon visit!! Picked up here 36.4395722, -97.0320818 swimming alone. Could hardly believe it! While no common loons were present for size comparison, this bird’s shape was notably different, with a proportionately much smaller head that was very rounded overall and not blocky and chunky, and the body appeared proportionately long and slender. The top of the head and neck was dark grayish-brown (which flashed gray in certain light) and was sharply demarcated with a straight, unbroken line from the bill to the breast, giving the bird a kind of “helmeted” look. There was no collar or jaggedness to the line. The bill was straight and dagger-like, and while not large like a a common, also not thin and slightly upturned like a Red-throated. Tried to get documentation for 20 minutes (the bird kept diving!) and was able to get photo and video which should be somewhat idable or at least very suggestive.
