Observation details
Continuing bird found by Hugh Ranson on 11/19. After scouring the area on either side of the Calle De Los Amigos bridge for over an hour, intently listening, I finally heard, then saw, the Winter Wren foraging south of the bridge on the western bank of the creek approx here (34.4261089, -119.7502732) at 4:17pm. While others have noted the call's similarity to Song Sparrow, to me, it sounded more like tennis shoes squeaking on a basketball court. It immediately cut through the starling-noise. Once I located it, the bird continued vocalizing until I left, but before then, it was either completely silent or much further down (or up) stream than has previously been reported. In very low light, the main thing that struck me about the bird visually was just: that is one *very* small brown bird. Also, it was extremely cute. I watched (and listened) as it worked its way upstream along the western bank, frequently ducking out of view behind overhanging vegetation. Hear recordings, and see abysmal photo (taken 20 minutes before sunset on an overcast day in a dark creek bed).
