Observation details
Noted black-duck like bird (dark body, pale head and neck, with two Mallards. Was drawn to solid, yellow bill, no markings. Noted tone as turned to make sure it wasn't green caste (as in ABDU), and to check if spot at base of bill--nothing evident. Bill Mallard-like in size, not elongated a little as expected of Mottled. Went out to photo; Will post. Pictures on water blurred. First photo in flight and enlarged shows yellow bill, dark tail and speculum features, tone of tan in head. Tail brown, not white, and speculum with white borders (show well in photos). Seemed classic. First found off north part of Sandy Beach. Later found with more Mallards from Mouse Creek area. Saw the dark bird fly in with Mallards and land on distant point. Watched through scope noting the dark brown body plumage, pale neck and head, some eye-line and slightly darker cap, and that plain yellow bill. Both Jack and I were able to study the bird through scopes, although mostly waiting for those moments when it lifted its head..
