Observation details
This little guy was discovered this morning paddling around the dock and boat ramp and the head of Keauhou Bay. When Bret and I arrived, it was still there actively foraging at the surface and diving. It appeared starved and was very tame, sometimes within a few feet of swimmers and people standing on the dock. No one present had information as to when it showed up. As we were photographing the duck and watching, it swam towards two boys fishing from the pier, dived, and took the baited hook. It came to the surface and tried to dislodge the hook and got snared in the line. Bret caught it and phoned the Hawaii Wildlife Center to arrange for pick up. We dropped the bird off in Kailua Kona for others to transfer to HWC.
