Observation details
spotted by RAR as interesting shorebird at moderate distance; telescope confirmed as Buff-breasted, later closer, as it flew fairly frequently, trying different spots, but actively feeding around the pond; short, straight, bill, dark as best we could see; rather open, blank face, with prominent dark eye and slightly paler surround; upper half of underparts buffy, but the color weak and faint, contrasting with dingy white lower underparts; legs yellow, the color fairly easily seen, but not really bright; upperparts extensively fringed and eged with paler, buffy tones, the back looking contrastingly blacker than the wings, the nape and crown finely marked, but less prominently than the back and wings; underwings with central region pale, not all white or strongly contrasting, but typical pale underwings, the upper surface without prominent wing marking, just the slightest hint of a short pale mark, no white rump or side of the rump; silent as best we could tell, but it would have been hard to hear it above the cranes were it calling at all; many photos taken, but image size will be small and require some abuse to enlarge; will be added later; sighting posted to AZ NM listserv at the time;
