Observation details
12:52 to 13:13 - 1st heard (buzzy, harsh breezeek note followed by a pause and repeated 2 more times); locate/visual 1 immature BROWN 1st WINTER (see The Sibley Guide to Birds, pg 341) NSHR (ID species in part by its pinkish base of lower mandible) perched in top of hardwood tree and remaining in place for a lengthy time --- usual shrike behavior is actively foraging. BEHAVIOR: Stays put (unlike a shrike that is a very active forager) on perch - turns out it is in wait mode. Opens mouth wide 4xs - notice an enlargement in its CROP (photograph 2) after ~3rd open-mouth series, which pushes two pellets into crop from digestive tract; next TWO pellets are disgorged/discharged from mouth to the ground one-after-the-other - 1st pellet is small (documented by a lesser quality photo and also witnessed with binoculars) and 2nd pellet is large (photographs 3 and 4).
