NOTES: C. lugubris? BNA: Calls "pip-pip-pip" or "quip-quip". mf [Indeed! The Peters Checklist (Traylor, M. A., Jr. (Ed.) 1979. Check-list of Birds of the World. Vol. VIII. Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge) recognized all taxa from this group in both North and South America as Contopus fumigatus. The AOU (1998) recognizes three species: C. fumigatus, C. lugubris, and C. pertinax. Following this taxonomy, C. pertinax occurs south only to Nicaragua, and only C. lugubris is known from Costa Rica. A similar comment is made by Coopmans in the voice announcement at the beginning of this recording. Still, close similarity in the calls of these species means that BNA terminology can appropriately be used to designate these as "pip" calls. Quality added (2-3) - CAM - 22 December 2004].
