Observation details
27.897892779, -97.314359980 In the back of the soccer field south of motel. I parked at Chatworth Park and walked up the sidewalk to Soccer Field #6, where 23 MAGO and the BTGO were foraging with 7-8 LBCU in the grass. I photographed as they moved south towards the bathrooms then took off towards fields west of Cedar Dr. The BTGO was easy to pick out among the MAGO. The Marbleds were buffy whereas the BTGO was paler and more grayish. The supercilium was more pronounced and the spotting on the mantle was larger and more round. The Bar-tailed appeared more streaked on the back instead of barred like MAGO. The size difference in the legs was shockingly obvious. Bar-tailed was much more squat, with slightly shorter tibiae than MAGO but much shorter tarsi. The breast and belly were dull gray, no buff whatsoever on the underparts. There was some subtle dark markings on the undertail coverts. I only got a distant view of the underwing in flight, but it was notably gray, with what appeared to be subtle black markings. Skip Cantrell photograped it in flight this morning and confirmed the bird's identity. Ryan Rodriguez suggests it is the Siberian subspecies. Photographed.
