Tom Wurster called our attention to a good size flock of Red Crossbills flying overhead near “the meadow” less than a 1/4th mile north of the Blue Jay Campground entrance along Long Canyon Road. In one photo taken by Tom Fangrow, 8 birds were “captured.” 5 were red males, and 3 were female/immature type. Tom Wurster commented that he saw mostly red males. Edana counted 11 birds. I first ascertained the identification of birds, and only counted 9, and then tried to record their sharp “kip kip” or “kip kip kip” calls. Sounded like the Red Crossbills in Bluff Lake, Big Bear area. No success in recording, since this thrilling event happened so fast...
