Observation details
***Second eBird record for Indonesia (and fifth overall record from what we can find), though likely a scarce migrant/under-reported species due to lack of coverage. Eaton et al mentions four records of Eurasian Hobby for Indonesia - two from West Java: one collected in February 1927 and 5 observed between September and November 2012, a single record from Layang-Layang in September 1998, and an immature collected on Timor in January 1896. We observed a smaller, sleeker-winged Falcon zip overhead on a walk southeast of Malakoni (just past the large river). After talking some photos and processing the views we had, we knew we had seen a hobby and not a Peregrine Falcon. Only a couple minutes later further down the road, we encountered a juv. Peregrine sitting in a tree - offering a great comparison of the two species - and when it flew, we had nice views of its much broader wings and streaking extending through its undertail. Photos obtained show a hobby with a yellow cere, sharp facial pattern and mustachial stripes, and light buffy wash on its undertail and base of its wings, all pointing away from Oriental Hobby and towards Eurasian.
