Observation details
I was standing below the observation deck at the outer edge of the trail facing east when the flock of Juncos arrived and dove into the large field of dog fennel. They all came in like a flowing stream (which made them much easier to count) from the south moving north, and as they were dropping in, I was counting by 10's. In this unique situation, there was no way to duplicate numbers because I was counting as the birds flowed in, all going the same direction, as if I were counting passing cars. Fifty is conservative and there were easily over 60. They were all Slate-colored. After the influx ended, I waited until individuals began to briefly pop up out of the deep fennel so I could take photos. There was constant vocalization throughout the flock, caught on audio recording by Merlin.
