Observation details
Very nice Hawaiian type moa. More hens than cocks evident. All with uniformly wild-type plumage. Some variation in hen plumage, but still slight and mainly in shade or tone of overall color. This may be a relict population of original Hawaiian chickens. A hundred years ago there were a few small Hawaiian fishing settlements scattered along the S Kohala coast; these are all gone now, swept away by resort development, except for this small homestead that serves as a caretaker's hale for Kam Schools. It is many miles from the nearest residence or community of any sort and is surrounded by vast tracts of barren lava, effectively isolating the chickens from outside gene flow (unless fowl are brought in).
