Observation details
I went to the north end of Central Park to look for the longest continuing Great Horned Owl we call Geraldine who was seen in the Ramble Mon 11/7 but not seen Tues 11/8. When I arrived before sunset another birder was observing her - he told he'd first spotted her at 3 due to a jay mob. The birder was helpful & shared best views - we observed from a respectful distance together until he left soon after her first tree-jump to an open perch at 4:55. The GHO preened, stretched & scratched. She appeared to be having difficulty spitting a pellet - the process took her a long time & I did not actually see her spit it but I think she did. The GHO dove E & down out of sight at 5:05 & I followed. While out of my sight at 5:07 the GHO called two croak calls, one full hoot phrase, then two more croak calls - difficult to hear due to the sound of a waterfall. At 5:14pm just after the nightly chopper passed over the GHO flew out high in front of me. A tree blocked my view of her flight direction so she might have stopped to perch again in the woods or veered off. I waited in the woods but heard no more hoots or calls. GHO not seen at Compost or the North Meadow.
