Observation details
One immature individual with bright yellow legs and seemingly reduced/absent fringing to tertials, brighter, cleaner tones throughout all suggested possible first cycle Spotted Sandpiper (which would be new to Zambia). However, on closer inspection the projection of the tail beyond the primaries seems longer than would be expected on Spotted and there is also a suggestion of same fringing on tertials (perhaps reduced through wear). Additionally, in flight, the white wing bar does not seem to reduce in width towards the body as would be expected in Spotted. Altogether it points to the bird being a Common Sandpiper with unusually bright legs. However, would be interested to hear if others have a different conclusion on this bird.
