Observation details
Continuing male first reported by Twila Watkins on November 5. Black and white barred back, central tail feathers white with black barring, some black speckling on white rump, red crown and nape, slightly buff-tinted belly and sides of face. First refound today by Danny Tipton at 10th & Main where he showed it to us. The bird later moved around the neighborhood where we saw it at two other locations, most notably at the east end of nearby Portales City Park. We also observed it poking out of a suspected roosting cavity at approx. 2:10 p.m. in the park. It called on a number of occasions, both during flight and while perched. It responded to playback of RBWO calls by poking its head out of the cavity. Photos.
