Observation details
Presumably continuing bird found by Richard Webster the day before in the same location. Seen at fork in trail toward NWR, predominately on the south side of the public trail (right at the fork). Small, compact looking empid, with largish head and narrow tail. Short primary projection. Dark wings with white wing bars. Head, back, rump and tail were overall an olive-gray with the upper back leaning more towards olive and the rump more towards gray. Throat, breast and belly were a whitish/light gray, with throat being the lightest and top of the breast the darkest, with maybe just a hint of color on the flanks. Bill was small but not tiny. Dark on top with the lower mandible being completely flesh-colored from base to tip. A complete white eye ring, obvious and even in width. Bird was pretty consistently tail wagging with a twitchy upward motion, fast and short in stroke. I spent 30-40 minutes with this bird as it foraged by the road in low brush, almost never raising above eye level. Was still present when I left. Photos attached. Bird was initially silent but then after nearly 30 minutes two Northern Cardinals flew into the bush it was in and started a commotion, at which point the flycatcher began to call consistently for a minute or two and I was able to get a recording on my phone. Sounds like the right "pwit" call but hard for me to discern from other similar "whit" type calls. With the difficulties of empid ID, I am landing on Least, through mostly elimination of others based on the following: Hammonds: Bill size, lower mandible color, overall color and primary projection Dusky: Lower mandible color, overall color Gray: Lack of dark tip on lower mandible, tail wagging behavior, overall size/shape Pacific-Slope/Cordilleran: Eye-ring shape, overall size/shape, call Willow: Eye-ring width, overall size/shape Alder: Primary projection, call Yellow-bellied: color, call, primary projection Acadian: call, primary projection Buff-breasted: color, call
