Observation details
Truly mind blowing for me. I was on a path between a cornfield and the bush, and it started with about 10 of them on the path/fields edge. As I approached they flew to the right of the path into the bush. More and more kept flying from in the cornfield —> across the path and into the bush, which I counted exactly as they flew across the path in front of me (the fact that they were all moving the same direction made it easy to get an accurate count). Once the last of them had flown from the cornfield and into the bush I quit counting so there were none double counted whatsoever. The interesting thing was, that flock was almost 100% FOSP, with only a handful of ATSP/WTSP/juncos. The next field over had another large sparrow flock of close to 150 sparrows, but it was almost 100% juncos and ATSP, with only 1 or 2 FOSP. Count was 45 from edge of the cornfield, plus three other individuals seen around different parts of the property earlier. Pretty large reddish sparrows with bright red tails, splotchy chests, and partly yellow bills. Quite a chorus of them singing as well. Pretty wild experience.
