Observation details
Continuing; Small peep, grayish with black legs and beak. Originally thought to be a Semipalmated Sandpiper, but determined to be a Western Sandpiper following review of multiple photos of this individual by shorebird expert Jon Dunn. Key characters cited for this determination include the pale gray color of the upperparts, fine but distinct streaking on the breast, and lack of a bold supercilium. The beak is shorter than some Western Sandpipers, but within the expected range, and becomes thinner near the tip. The head and bill shape is also consistent with Western Sandpiper, and not Semipalmated Sandpiper.
