Media notes
via J Dowding. . Yes, it's definitely a shore plover, but a juvenile. The bill is too long for a banded dotterel, the dark eye patch is much more prominent, and the legs are stockier and a pale orange colour. And the colour bands tell us who it is. GO-WB was bred in captivity at the National Wildlife Centre, Mount Bruce, this past season. It hatched in November, was transferred to an aviary on Motutapu Island in late December, and then released on the island in late January this year. The straight-line distance from Motutapu to Big Sand is 73 km.
Observation details
thought it was a banded Dotterel at first. Happy to be corrected if wrong. South end of Big sand
