Observation details
Continuing bird at King's Beach at Lynn/Swampscott line. At wrack line around 9:15 AM. I waited on beach for over an hour for tide to push birds up to me for better looks. Smaller bird than Ring Bills with a delicate, rounded head.. Coloration of bill distinctive with yellow at tip and coming to more of a point than the other gulls. Banded bird....did get several photos of the band from different perspectives. Hopefully the experts can put the pieces of the puzzle together. Upon returning home from work, I got an e-mail from Fuglamerkingar - Icelandic Bird Ringing Centre Icelandic Institute of Natural History in Reykjavik which confirm the band number and bird's point of origin. Dear Dan Prima thank you for reporting your observation of a metal ringed Mew Gull/Common Gull Larus canus. The ring is definitely Icelandic and I belive I managed to list out the number as 581641 from your photographs. And indeed this ring was used on a Mew Gull. 581641, 5900 Stormmáfur, 381 Þorlákur S. Helgason, Akureyrarflugvöllur, 23.6.2013 The bird was ringed as pullus near Akureyri airport in N-Iceland on 23rd June 2013. We will send you a proper receipt for this very interesting resighting soon. Thank you again. Best wishes, Gudmundur A. Gudmundsson
