Observation details
Carefully counted by 10s. 40-50% juveniles. When we arrived they were already flowing through at full force and continued to do so all day; combined with our count from the runway after this we totaled 42,413 for the day! Almost all were within 200ft of the shore, and flocks were often even flying right down the beach and breaking around us! Between 1:00pm and 1:45pm the rate of passage did slow down and flocks were more slowly moving through and doing a lot of foraging in the surf. Before and after that window they were really just streaming through non-stop. The kittiwake phenomenon this past week has been truly exceptional and unprecedented for the region.
