Observation details
Chickadees gave their high-pitched alarm call - the Merlin flew in from the east and perched on a pole near the Fairgrounds entrance for a few minutes before flying NE - I think because I got too close to it (ca 20 m). It flew to the top of a spruce, distant NE of the pond. Looking at the pictures I got, I think it's clearly a Prairie Merlin - pale edging on upperwing coverts and scapulars (and also on tertials); buffy spotting in upperwing coverts and flight feathers; pale auriculars; sandy brown coloration above; and 4 whitish tail bands dorsally (excluding the terminal band).
