Observation details
***MEGA; potential 1st state record? Found earlier in the morning although reported then as Western Grebe. This was a large long-necked,long-billed grebe. Distinguished from Western Grebe by pale grey flanks contrasting with medium-gray back (more uniform dark on WEGR), strikingly yellowish orange bill (not dull green), and eye completely surrounded above by white (black touches top of eye on WEGR). The bill was brightest orange in the center, turning more yellow towards the tip. Gave both single and doubled calls. Audio recorded, but calls not very reliable for separating these two species. First seen swimming around the mouth of the river. Caught and swallowed a medium-sized fish. Later slowly moved to the west towards Breitbeck Park.
