Observation details
I have some experience with both WEGR and CLGR from Utah and Colorado. This bird had the four field-marks I would expect from CLGR - long bright yellow bill, lighter flanks, narrow stripe down the back of its neck and the eye is completely in the white. The only aspect of this bird that didn't seem right to me was its WEGR-like vocalization. Apparently that isn't a reliable field-mark and may not suggest a hybrid. The grebe was first seen as I was driving in, first by the Coast Guard Station, then swimming around to the back of the Maritime Museum. At times the grebe was only 50ft away. A state record if confirmed, hence the caution calling it a hybrid WEGR at first. (now confirmed) All photos digiscoped with a Kowa TSN-883 scope and a Sony RX100 camera.
