Observation details
Continuing bird discovered by Andrew Aldrich the previous afternoon. Foraging quietly and solo amid shin-high grasses in dry upland sandy portion of vast sandbar, surprisingly close to meter-high willow sprouts. Allowed very close approach by observers as long as we stood quietly or moved very slowly. Took flight for very short distances twice while I was there, although on neither occasion did it vocalize, so I did not hear the diagnostic "kittle" call. I did, however, get a decent view of the spread tail on its first flight, and it appeared very much as illustrated in the National Geographic field guide: triangular white patches with thin dark edgings cutting into the triangles -- quite different than a Lapland's tail.
