Observation details
Startled and flushed by a barking dog.. the bittern darted out of the woods and....well, it's obvious what it did, as can be seen in the first photo! the bird then tried to fly towards the river, but probably sensing that the river was an open space, did a rapid U turn and flew back towards the swamp. That was fantastic for us because we could now photograph the bird in flight and then continue to take pictures once it perched high on a tree. Interestingly.... it is very unusual for bitterns to perch on trees!!!
