Observation details
I noticed a very dark-backed shorb vanguarding a trio of SESAs as they gyrated around some flats north of the northern peninsula. Eventually, they landed, and the phalarope dropped into the water not thirty meters from us. We called it a Wilson’s first, but quickly came to the realization that we were dealing with a phalarope of a different color. The deciding factor was indeed the saturation of slate-black on the individual’s back and nape; and the amount of Kiss makeup it had donned that morning.
