With its dark brown upperparts, dark hindcrown, and dark patch leading back from the eye, this Red-necked Phalarope appears to be in full juvenile plumage. The small-looking body and the medium-length needle-like bill further identify it as a Red-necked Phalarope. (This is the typical plumage of early autumn birds.)
