Observation details
The first Virginia Rail was heard grunt calling - along with a Sora keep call - at 1:43 P.M. in the northern, innermost section of West Cove #2 Spartina marsh. This Virginia Rail came into view for a period of about a minute, with slow movements of curiosity. and four on the east side. At 1:47 P.M., two Virginia Rails grunt called, the second one further back in a bordering Phragmites stand. At 2:20 P.M., a third Virginia Rail grunt called - along with one Clapper Rail - just north of the large open pool adjacent to/north of West Cove #1. At 3:00 P.M. as I was beginning travel up river toward the sharp northwest bend, three Virginia Rails grunt called, all in the immediate vicinity of West Cove #2. Thus, four on the west side of the Herring River. By 3:50 P.M., I had returned from High Toss Road to the wide section of the Herring River, to investigate the east side of the river. At 3:52 P.M., I heard two Virginia Rails grunt calling north of East Cove #1. Entering East Cove #1, I heard an extended series of two, three, and four part calls of a third Virginia Rail on this side of the river. These calls were audio recorded at 4:03 P.M.. Finally, after entering Mill Creek, I heard another Virginia Rail grunt calling from well into Mill Creek toward the gold course, where a canoe cannot reach. Thus, four Virginia Rails on the east side of the Herring River, and eight total for the afternoon.
