First a series of calls prior to playback, and later a more excited series of chipping calls in response to playback.
Observation details
Second fall record for Monterey County? First detected chipping while skulking low in rank vegetation. We first recognized the chip call as something 'good' and different, and after a few minutes had it pegged down to a possible Kentucky Warbler. Not confident of the ID by ear alone, we spent the next hour trying to actually see the bird, and failed. Giving it one last try, we circled back to the place where we had encountered the bird originally, and we again heard it chipping, this time close enough to capture some sounds with our phones. We played the chip call back to it and it came in closer, but stayed low and mostly hidden in the dense vegetation. We managed a few bad photos, but had reasonable views of it as it skulked furtively along the ground and over logs. A very fun find!
