Media notes
This is the first photo I took when a photographer came up to me with the tern.
Observation details
Small tern with partial black cap, dark carpal bar, thin bill that was mostly dark with a reddish base, dark orangish legs. Initially identified in the field as a Common Tern, but Dave Irons and Shawneen Finnegan, after seeing photos, identified it as a juvenile Arctic Tern. Tern was found on the trail by a photographer. It did not appear to be physically injured but was showing signs of illness or exhaustion. Bird was captured and taken to the Portland Audubon facility for evaluation. According to the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Washington County, Oregon, there have only been a couple of previous reports of Arctic Tern in the county and this would be a first for TRNWR.
