Observation details
Two owls calling. Just heard two deep screech calls from different locations within one minute. My wife and I were photographing the Aurora and at 22:41 I clearly hear the first call. One minute later a second call, albeit from the opposite direction. We ended up hearing the pair of owls for approximately 15 minutes. One was doing the territorial chattering while flying overhead in large circles. At one point, I was able to briefly use my powerful spotligthing torch to illuminate the flying owl. While this one was chattering the whole 15 minutes with the sound fading in and out as it approached us, or flew further in its radius, the other owl was screeching from the vicinity of the forest from multiple locations evidenced by the directions of its calls. The screeches repeated 8-10 times over this period of activity. I managed to record some video (for the audio component only) of this, so once I can convert to an audio file I'll attach here if I can. It's very exciting to experience this kind of behaviour, which I have only noted once, in Sydney, in late April 2012, but I only managed a brief recording of one owl chattering (in Llandilo, on Seventh avenue).
