Observation details
Very pleased to get this bird. Saw a bird flying north right over the beach and thought it was an imm LAGU but something about it seemed wrong. Could only tell from the front that it was a smaller brown imm gull but as it flew I saw the big white triangular wing patches on the secondaries/inner primaries, black outer primaries, the white tail with black tip, and fine gold/buff scaling on the brownish gray upperparts. Seemed small headed and big chested like a pigeon. Flew up the beach and then circled out a little and joined some birds and porpoises working on a school of fish about 150 yds out. It would set on the water for a second and then lift up slowly flying over the water with feet held down, dodging some of the splashes of the bigger fish. Got a video of it here in flight able to see the wing patches. Over the next hour it flew around this area just south of the jetty and I didn’t really pay attention to it anymore but when I walked out along the jetty a bit later it was sitting in the water by the big green buoy on the nueces side of the line. Got another video of it here sitting on the water I’ll upload some screen grabs later. Able to see the dainty bill and small head, with brownish gray smudging on crown nape and sides of neck but mostly whitish face. Nice bird.
