Observation details
#20 1854 CHSW The Chimney Swift roost at Building 324 on Governors Island was viewed from south of the pool on Cartigan Road which is south of Building 324. This is on the Buttermilk Channel side. The roost is in the tallest of the chimneys visible from the road on the west side of the pool. The general location of the building is off the extreme SW corner of the Parade Ground and SW of the Catholic Church. ❏ At least thirteen (13) were counted entering the chimney roost. The first entry was during the 9th minute before sunset with the last entry during the 11th minute after sunset. It was mostly clear with a scattering of high cirrus clouds. The swifts entered in singles or fairly close doubles with no congregating of swifts above the site. They seemed to arrive after finishing up for the night and quickly settled in for the evening. They were very quiet as I only remember hearing one of them calling directly above my location. Sunset on September 16th is at 7:03pm (1903): • 10' before SS (+3): 1854, 1901 (2) • +10' after SS (+7): 1907, 1908 (2), 1911 (2), 1912 (2) • +20' after SS (+3): 1913, 1914 (2) • +30' after SS (+0) I stayed until 1934.0 (32 min. after sunset).
