Observation details
I had a good view of this juvenile for 5 minutes, both while it was flying and floating on the lake. Slightly smaller than nearby crows. In flight: gray-brownish back and neck, extending diagonally up to leading edge of wing, joining darker wingtips. Secondaries and perhaps a few inner primaries all white. The white looks like a triangle on each wing. This distinct dark-on-white pattern had an “M” shape. Tail completely white except for black terminal band. While floating: White face with gray-brownish half-hood. Colour extends down sides and back of neck, makes a bit of a spur into the all white chest. White forehead. Black bill. Ruled out Bonaparte’s gull due to bold M shape of colour across wings & back contrasted with all-white triangle formed on bottom of wings, more distinct half-hood, and lack of dark spot behind eye. Will attach not-great iphone photos. I have video of it in flight if a reviewer would like to see it- ebird won’t let me upload video.
