Observation details
rare local breeder; even scarcer in migration. today's bird is late: apparently the first record for anywhere in the Cayuga Lake Basin for September, and one of the few for anywhere in upstate New York after August. so, pretty unexpected here (only my second record for the yard). early during the mobbing playback I saw an empid, facing me but backlit against a gray sky. it looked more yellow below than white, so I called it a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and resumed scanning for warblers. later in the playback session I began to hear calls from a distant Least Flycatcher: had I misgauged the color of the underparts in the dim light? just then I also began to hear a different, closer flycatcher calling, also repeatedly. I couldn't quite place the call, but then I saw the bird, now in better light, and everything clicked: the 'YBFL' was an Acadian!, with uniform pale greenish yellow underparts, large bill, longer primary extension, and, of course, the characteristic ACFL call. once I settled on that identification, I did some playback of ACFL calls; the bird became a bit agitated, calling with greater frequency and circling around me. I made one Merlin recording of natural vocalizations, but apparently I unintentionally deleted this file (oops). fortunately I had made a second recording, of calls in response to playback, and that is what I've uploaded here.
