Media notes
Red-shouldered Hawk, Starling & Goldfinch mimicry interspersed with its own calls, given from ground below feeder.
Observation details
One bird doing Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk (not picked up on recording), Starling & American Goldfinch imitations on the ground below the feeder, mixed with normal Blue Jay calls (an actual American Goldfinch is also present in the first recording). These imitations are common occurrences, especially the BWHA mimicry, which is heard almost every day. This bird appeared almost bored, and was hopping around acting playfully aggressive toward squirrels and other birds around the feeder station. It had plenty to eat beforehand and did not seem food-motivated. Note to anyone birding at this location: if you hear what sounds like a Broad-winged or Red-shouldered Hawk's but don't see one, it's far more likely to be a Blue Jay! These 2 imitations consistently fool Merlin as well. Other past imitations include Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagle & Osprey.
