Media notes
Bird on the left (behind the Lapwing) has even (equal width) black and white banding of the tail indicating Short-billed (Garrigues). Bird on the right has a black tail with narrow white bars and may well be a Long-billed Dowitcher (Garrigues). However in the absence of other supporting evidence, and considering that Long-billed (migrants) are not expected to arrive until late October, we are reporting that bird as a Dowitcher spp.
Observation details
In attached photos the only visible field mark that could help with determining the ID of these two Dowitchers is the black and white banding of the tail. Following Garrigues, an evenly barred tail (black and white bars of equal width) of a Dowitcher (bird on the left) indicates Short-billed. Since we and several experienced observors have reported this species recently (same location; different dates) this additional record is justified. The other bird appears to have a black tail with narrow white banding which according to Garrigues indicates Long-billed. However considering the lack of any other evidence to support this latter conclusion, and that Long-billed (migrants) are not expected to arrive until late October, we are reporting this second bird as Short-billed/ Long-billed.
