Observation details
Great record for this area of NSW, there appears to be one other record in Broken hill. This western dispersion is in line with other recent reports from western NSW and highlights how good the conditions are at the moment. A single bird was heard calling just after sunset on the ridge above the campground. Phone recording of the call attached. Distinct low booming heard on multiple occasions. I located the bird again the next morning in an effort to get a photo, the bird flushed but missed the photo and could not get onto the bird again unfortunately. Large Buttonquail with a dark brown patterned back (the colours were not vibrant so likely male). Flanks a brown-grey which distinguishes it from the more likely Little Buttonquail, though call alone should be enough for an ID Habitat - ridge with sparse Mulga and predominantly Sclerolaena sp. as ground cover.
